absorbed the Nabatean
Òkingdom, adding greatly to the city’s monuments. By 500 AD,
ÒPetra was a Byzantine bishopric with its own cathedral.
ÒIn 551, all was destroyed in a massive earthquake. Recently, an
Òexquisite mosaic floor has been excavated and columns of the
Òbishop’s house reerected.
